Applications of internet
The internet is a wonderful resource which contains hundreds of websites dedicated to thousands of topics. It is difficult to know from which website to obtain the information you want. This is a problem which all internet users face since there is no menu for the users to navigate through the internet. Although there is no menu, but they are several resources available which help in this task. There are some websites which are used to search information on the web.
This searching for information on the web moving from page to page, website to website is known as ‘web browsing’ or ‘surfing’ as it is called. Using Internet, organizations all over the world are able to exchange data and people are able to communicate with each other instantly in many ways. Video conferencing has made it possible for the people to see each other while communicating. Researchers are able to collect information in the areas of research. Online shopping has become so popular that everyone enjoys visiting the online stores from the convenience of their homes.

Information Retrieval
The world wide web is a huge database of information. It is a global set of documents, images and other resources which are interrelated logically by hyperlinks and access by the URLs. Internet is used to share information across the world. These interconnected network exchange information by using same standards and protocols. The main access protocol of the World Wide Web is Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The main software which is used for the Web browsing is called a Web Browser.
Instant Messaging
An Instant message, or IM, is the process of sending real time messages from one user to another. A user types a message that is sent over a network and received by another user. Instant messaging can be between two or more people. It can be done using a special software such as Yahoo Messenger or Windows Live Messenger.
Video Conferencing
The process where with the help of computers, people in two different locations are able to communicate using audio and video is called a Video conferencing. The audio and video are converted into compressed digital signals. They are then transmitted using the internet and reconverted at the receivers end where they are displayed on a large screen using speakers for the audio. Each participant has a microphone, speakers, and a video camera mounted on the computer.
E-Group
E-Group is a group of people who come together to form an online or web community. This is a feature in many social networking sites which is now becoming very popular as it allows people to share photos, events or comment to and read from their own interest. It is a convenient means to get connected with older friends or new acquaitances or other like minded people. It started as a free email group services that allowed you to easily create and join email groups. E-mail groups allow you to send email messages to a group of people using just one email address. No need to type along list of addresses.
Blog
Blog is an online journal or diary of an individual. It is mostly written by one person who is called a blogger. It is generally used to tell about an individual’s view on any particular topic, promote products, provide information etc. People can read the content and also leave their comments. It is a website consisting of entries called posts. The post appear in a reverse chronological order with the most recent entry appearing first. Some.terms related to blogs are :-
1. Blogging – The act of writing a post for a blog.
2. Blogger – A person who writes content for a blog
3. Blogosphere – The online community of blogs and bloggers.
News Group
Similar to a forum, newsgroup is an on-line discussion group. News groups are means of public discussion. Newsgroup articles or messages look like e-mail, but millions of people all over the world can read them. There are thousand of new groups covering every conceivable topic of interest on the internet. You can participate either only by viewing or actively participating.
To view and post messages to a news group, you need to run a program called News reader on a computer.
E-learning
E-learning is the learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the internet l. It utilizes electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside a traditional classroom where the professor is teaching. In most cases, it refers to a course, program or degree which is delivered completely online.
There are many terms used to describe learning such as Distance Education, Computerized electronic learning, Online learning, Internet learning etc.
E-shopping
E-shopping is a form of electronic commerce which allows consumers to directly buy goods or services from a seller over the internet. It has been gaining popularity over the last few years because people find it convenient and easy to shop from the comfort of their homes. They do not have to wait in long queues or search from store to store for a particular item. They can compare the products easily and get good bargains online.
